Job Opening – Transportation Engineer/Planner (Bridgeport, CT)

The Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG) is a multi-discipline, regional planning organization with six member municipalities: the City of Bridgeport and the Towns of Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull. MetroCOG is governed by a Board of Directors comprising the Chief Elected Officials from each of its six communities.

Position Details
MetroCOG seeks qualified candidates for the position of Transportation Engineer/Planner. Under the supervision of the Executive Director the Transportation Engineer/Planner will:

  • Manage design and engineering planning for municipal and regional projects, with a primary focus on transportation in addition to other agency disciplines, such as land use and environmental planning, etc.
  • Apply knowledge of transportation engineering concepts to assist in the transportation planning process.
  • Work with a team of professionals to support member municipalities in the review of engineering plans, provide feedback, and offer technical assistance if necessary.
  • Assist with day-to-day planning and engineering activities (e.g. project scoping, cost estimation/budgeting, RFP development, etc.); including advisement on transportation procedures and best practices
  • Conduct field observations and site visits

The ideal candidate for this position has a working knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures in transportation engineering and a passion for enhancing communities’ quality-of-life. The candidate will demonstrate an ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders at critical stages in the planning and design process, including local staff, consulting firms, state agencies, and at times the public.

Job Qualifications
To be considered for the position of Transportation Engineer/Planner, candidates must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study (Urban Planning, Civil/Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field),
  • Minimum of 3-years of relevant work experience that includes a working knowledge of transportation planning and engineering,
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented,
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills,
  • Ability to think critically and strategically in solving problems,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Synchro is desired, but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full time, 35-hour per week hybrid position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance and the option to participate in the agency’s retirement plan matching program.
