Regional Planner – The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments

The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (SCCOG) seeks highly motivated and creative individuals to join its team of passionate and dedicated planning professionals. The candidate who fills this position will work in multiple facets of planning at both the local and regional level.

This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position. About the Position

Regional Planners participate in comprehensive planning activities and functions, assist with the administration of SCCOG’s transportation planning program, and provide assistance to member municipalities with land use planning and administration and special projects as needed. SCCOG staff have the opportunity to engage in multiple subject areas including land use regulation, economic development, natural resource conservation, transportation, housing, human services, sustainability and resilience, renewable energy, and emergency management

Qualifications

The position of Planner I requires a bachelor’s degree in planning or related field; Planner II requires a master’s degree in planning or related field plus 1 year experience, or bachelor’s and three years’ experience; and Planner III requires a master’s +4 or bachelor’s +6. Applicants with demonstrated experience in municipal land use administration, transportation planning, and grants management are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and experience with project management, analyzing and presenting data and preparing technical written reports. Proficiency with ArcGIS, Excel, InDesign and Sharepoint is preferred.

SCCOG serves 22 municipalities with a total population of 280,430 and functions as the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization. SCCOG also counts as affiliate members Connecticut’s two federally recognized Native American Tribes and works closely with the region’s two military installations, the United States Naval Submarine Base and the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Primary focus areas of SCCOG are regional planning, which includes producing studies and plans that affect the responsible development of the region; transportation planning and prioritization of State and Federal transportation funding; and regional services, which includes staffing assistance to local land use commissions and coordinating inter-municipal cooperation.
