Are you ready to take an active role building a climate-resilient future for New England communities? BETA has an immediate opening for a Hazard Mitigation and Climate Resilience Planner to join our rapidly growing team with a variety of exciting projects in progress.

The Hazard Mitigation and Climate Resilience (HMCR) Planner will support the Climate Resilience Manager on a wide range of projects requiring knowledge of community planning, natural hazard mitigation, and public engagement. This is a staff level position in which planner will write reports, develop engagement strategies, facilitate meetings, conduct outreach and communication, assist with grant writing, and conduct a variety of other administrative tasks. This individual will contribute to a variety of planning projects working with municipalities of all sizes. Day-to-day activities will vary, though most of your work will be office-based. You may be developing a flood mitigation strategy for a Rhode Island community one day and leading a public meeting in Massachusetts the next.

Specific duties will include:

  • Contributing to all aspects of municipal hazard mitigation plans and plan updates;
  • Contributing to Comprehensive and Master plans; Open Space and Recreation Plans; hazard risk and climate change vulnerability assessments; and other planning projects;
  • Preparing reports, presentations, agendas, web postings, and other materials to support planning efforts and public processes;
  • Communicating with clients and community stakeholders via social media, websites, email, and phone;
  • Conducting research and data analysis including researching previous natural hazard damages, assessing local hazard risk, and analyzing demographic and building trends;
  • Developing and facilitating public forums, workshops, and other digital and in-person community engagement;
  • Assisting with proposal development; and
  • Assisting with other duties as assigned.

Evening events, occasional weekend events, and local travel are required for this position. 

Qualifications:

Either a Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant work experience or a Master’s degree are preferred.  Educational focus could include urban/regional planning, public policy, environmental science, public administration, or other related fields. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the USA and a valid driver’s license and/or the ability to arrange transportation to a BETA office and meetings in different parts of the region. Preference will be given to applicants who can start in early 2022.

Successful candidates for this position will demonstrate all or most of the following skills:

  • Basic understanding of best practices in community planning, hazard mitigation, climate adaptation, risk assessment, nature-based solutions, social equity, and stakeholder engagement;
  • Excellent communication skills for work with municipal officials, other agencies, and the public;
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to tailor messages to specific audiences;
  • Strong design skills, including documents, presentations, and infographics;
  • Understanding of multi-step processes and how to work within them in a team environment;
  • Ability to develop press releases, website content, social media content, and other outreach materials;
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks across multiple projects;
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Outlook, Excel, and Word;
  • Excellent time management and coordination skills; and
  • A professional demeanor and a positive attitude.

Applicants demonstrating a familiarity with best practices in planning for climate resilience and adaptation in the Northeast are preferred.
