Principal

Description

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates seeks an experienced leader to serve as a Principal in its Boston office to support the multimodal planning practice with a focus on parking and transportation demand management (TDM). The desired candidate will have at least 12 years of experience and a track record managing small and large-scale parking, TDM, and/or multimodal projects and proposal efforts for both public and private sector clients.

Nelson\Nygaard develops sustainable transportation solutions for people. Our work emphasizes creative, innovative transportation planning and community involvement, often within a wider set of goals such as equity, economic development and reduced dependence on the private automobile. Nelson\Nygaard offers a dynamic work environment that is fast-paced, congenial, and supportive. This is your opportunity to work with some of the most innovative planners and engineers in the United States. Our office culture is built upon diversity and creativity.

For over 30 years, we have led the transportation planning field with our values and innovation. For all that time, we have been guided by the principle of putting people first—designing transportation systems for people, not just cars. This principle also extends to how we operate as a firm internally. We were founded by two women who believed in the benefits of a more egalitarian workplace, where leadership and innovation could blossom at all levels and where diversity was a core strength. Today we are 120 talented and dedicated people in nine offices across the country; what unites us at Nelson\Nygaard is the belief that transportation can change the world and that through our work we can make the world more just, more sustainable, more connected, and more beautiful.

Projects will include a wide range of studies and plans, including municipal strategic planning and policy, employer TDM and parking, transportation management and VMT reduction plans for new developments, shared parking analyses, and parking strategies. Candidates with additional transportation planning skillsets (such as TOD planning, active transportation, transit planning, curb management, emerging mobility or our other focus areas) that bring a diverse project portfolio are encouraged to apply as well.

Projects would be located primarily in New England but there could be some minor travel (when safe and appropriate). You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s Boston office staff and with staff in offices throughout the country. Our approach is to bring the most appropriate staff together, irrespective of where they are based, as we believe collaboration across offices produces better outcomes and staff growth.

Junior Designer

Description

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking an enthusiastic Junior Designer for our Boston, New York, Washington DC, or Austin office. In this role you’ll work alongside planners and engineers to make our visual materials more engaging, delightful, and clear.

About Us

For over 30 years, Nelson\Nygaard has led the transportation planning field with our values and innovation. We’ve always been guided by the principle of putting people first—designing transportation systems for people, not just cars. This principle also extends to how we operate as a firm. We were founded by two women who believed in the benefits of a more egalitarian workplace, where leadership and creativity can blossom at all levels and where diversity is a core strength. Today, we are 120 talented and dedicated people in nine offices across the country who continue to live by those values. What unites us at Nelson\Nygaard is the belief that transportation can change the world and our steadfast commitment to make the world more just, more sustainable, more connected, and more beautiful.

Nelson\Nygaard offers a dynamic and self-directed work environment that is fast-paced, congenial, and supportive. This is your opportunity to work with one of the most innovative groups of planners and engineers in the United States, including highly talented junior and support staff. Our office culture is built upon diversity and creativity.

The Opportunity

As a Junior Designer, you’ll help us tell visual stories that make the world a better place, through the lens of transportation.  More specifically, you’ll work alongside transportation planners and engineers to develop visual communications materials, including reports, slide decks, graphics, maps, personas, data visualizations, branding, basic websites, and community engagement activities. These materials need to look great and resonate with their intended audiences.

This is not your ordinary graphic design role. You’ll be a key team member throughout each project, providing insight and expertise from the start—not just making things look good at the end.

In addition, you’ll:

  • Collaborate with the Visual Communications Team, including participating in a 30-minute weekly meeting.
  • Elevate the functional and aesthetic quality of our firmwide visual communications. This includes helping steward the Nelson\Nygaard brand.
  • Learn, improve, and share design skills.
  • Serve as the primary point person in your local office for visual communications requests and questions.

We have flexible career paths at Nelson\Nygaard. If you have an urban planning background and want to continue doing planning work in addition to visual communications, please tell us this in your application.

About You

  • You have a great attitude: you’re resourceful, curious, communicative, and enthusiastic. You don’t just find problems, you suggest solutions. You take initiative. And of course, you’re passionate about how transportation can make the world a better, more equitable place.
  • You have an outstanding eye for design. You make content aesthetically appealing and functional. You effectively convey information using words, charts, maps, colors, diagrams, and photos. Your document layout and formatting skills are excellent.
  • You are empathic and a good listener. You understand the language of transportation professionals, as well as the needs of non-technical audiences.
  • You’re a clear writer. You get to the point.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree in geography, urban planning, architecture, engineering, or a related field, or 1-2 years of experience in a transportation-related effort—through paid work, volunteering, advocacy, or otherwise. Formal training in graphic design is welcome but not required. If you have an alternative background, we encourage you to apply.

Your Technical Skills

  • You have experience developing graphics in Adobe Illustrator and laying out documents in Adobe InDesign.
  • You have a knack for formatting reports, presentations, and charts in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. You know how to adjust Styles in a document and Master Slides in a deck.
  • Familiarity with GIS is helpful but not necessary.
  • Experience with any of the following would be considered a bonus: R, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress, UX design, rendering, SketchUp, Unity, wayfinding, Photoshop, After Effects, Animate, video editing, or Section 508 compliance.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is industry competitive, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; pre-tax transit and bicycling benefit; professional development funds; a 401k program; life insurance; and paid holidays and paid time off.

To Apply

To apply, please click on the ‘Apply Online’ link. Qualified and interested candidates must submit a cover letter, resume, and work samples (not to exceed 6MB). If your work samples exceed 6MB, please note this in your cover letter, along with a link to the samples, e.g., via a portfolio website or file sharing service such as Dropbox.

Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.

Notes on Work Samples

  • The more work samples you can provide, the better. We want to get a sense of your aesthetic style. Samples don’t need to relate to transportation.
  • Formatting and layout skills are essential to this position. Include at least one sample that showcases these skills. Note that we are most interested in clean formatting and your ability to convey information clearly. We aren’t concerned with the software you use for your samples—Word, PowerPoint, InDesign, a combination, or anything else.
  • If your sample includes group work, specify the elements for which you were responsible.
