Vacancy is in the Planning division of the Development Services Department. Under general supervision, provides assistance to the Director and Division Directors by preparing a variety of informational material. Evaluates public reaction to City programs and suggests ways to meet the public’s need for information on City programs. Creates general and special communications involved in providing the public with knowledge of the functions, operations, and programs of the City. Prepares speeches and other communications for public officials, assisting and advising in preparation of visual displays and other graphic material for public presentation. Evaluates complaints to determine whether public policies and programs are understood by the public and employees. Prepares annual reports and other periodic and special publications which may be assigned, directing the editing, writing, and production of employee and Department bulletins, booklets, and brochures. Performs related work as required.
This is a HMEA union position. The hours of this position are 40 per week and the above salary includes 5% in lieu of overtime.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure:
- Knowledge of general methods, principals, and practices of public relations.
- Knowledge of various methods used in the duplication of written and graphic material.
- Knowledge of English composition, standard grammar, and punctuation.
- Skill in the tabulation and presentation of statistical data for publication.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally, including making presentations to large groups.

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with major coursework in liberal arts AND three (3) year of responsible employment or participation in government, a quasi-public position, or in an organization dealing with government and public affairs, including experience in technical, promotional, or news writing.
