An Assistant Town Planner is sought to join the Planning Department. This department is comprised of the following staff members: A full time Town Planner and an Administrative Assistant shared between the Building Inspector and Planning Departments.
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Town Manager and working in close collaboration with the Town Planner, the Assistant Planner will work to carry out the regulatory planning and development functions of the department. The position will work closely with the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals assisting staff, reviewing applications and coordinating preparation of meeting agendas and information as well as other projects and tasks as identified by the Director.
Provides assistance to the Assistant Town Manager and Town Planner, on tasks as directed, including: maintain lists of active and past projects, prepare and track legal notices and advertisements, assist applicants to submit complete applications, and document follow up on conditions of approval.
Coordinates plan review among various Town Departments and outside consultants as directed.
As directed, answers questions from landowners, developers and other interested persons seeking information about how to apply for permits, responds to daily public inquiries on Town conservation or planning matters over the phone, in writing and/or in person.
Assists with town committees such as the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee, Complete Streets Committee, Trails Committee, and other Committees as directed.
Tracks Building Permits when such permits have land use or conservation decisions.
Assume additional responsibilities as directed.
The Assistant Town Planner will sit in the Planning/Building Department of Shrewsbury’s Town Hall. The hours are conveniently 8 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday with an hour lunch period. At least one night meeting per month is required.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, community planning, landscape architecture, public administration or other related field with one years’ experience in consulting or municipal planning.
A valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge of the principles & practices of planning, particularly as applied to Massachusetts land use laws pertaining to zoning and subdivision control
Excellent interpersonal & organizational skills and the ability to work well with the public.
Ability to work independently.
Knowledge of basic land use concepts such as site design, roadway and subdivision development, landscape design and site planning.
Working knowledge of general permitting process and understanding of local zoning bylaws, subdivision rules and regulations, MGL Chapter 40A, and other applicable state statutes required.
Preferable skills include:
- Business computer applications (Word, Excel, Access)
- ArcView GIS computer mapping
- Design Software
