Assistant Director of Planning/Sustainability – City of Waltham

Duties: The Assistant Director for Planning/Sustainability shall be responsible for assisting with the administration and management of sustainable City of Waltham and community-based planning, including sustainability, livability and resiliency initiatives, as assigned and under the direct supervision of the Planning Director. These initiatives will include collaborating within the Planning Department to develop and update core City plans and reports/long term planning studies, green energy projects, reduction in energy usage, capital project management, preparation and administration of Federal and State sustainable grants.  This position performs complex professional, administrative, technical, supervisory work and project management.  Often project assignments will involve coordination with Federal and State agencies who manage grant programs and working with them to complete requirements for grants/reimbursement.  This role will include, but not be limited to, planning activities associated with Waltham’s Green Communities Designation, Municipal Vulnerabilities Preparedness, and Climate Resiliency initiatives.  The City of Waltham Planning Department is a highly-interactive, creative and solution- oriented team.  This position requires a person who is a strong team player with great communication skills who enjoys multi-tasking, performing complex tasks and managing projects/initiatives that require a high level of initiative, creative problem solving in the planning, administration and execution of programs/service. Assists the City Planner in preparing grant applications and project management of planning/sustainability initiatives. Additional planning/sustainability tasks include implementing Sustainable Planning objectives, assisting with preparing draft grant proposals/RFPs to support various sustainability projects, programs and functions. As assigned, interacting with professional consultants, city departments and community members.  Develops, implements and prepares various planning documents including Green Communities Reporting.  In addition, all other tasks as assigned by the Planning Director. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in planning or related fields with demonstrated ability working with the principles and practice of urban sustainability.  LEED accredited professional preferred.  Strong writing, analytical and interpersonal skills required. Municipal experience preferred.  Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.  Must successfully pass a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check, pre-employment physical and drug, alcohol test. Candidate must have Planning experience.
