Urban Designer – McMahon Associates

We are seeking a savvy design professional to complement our team of planners and engineers, committed to improving communities through transportation and community design. McMahon Associates is comprised of progressive transportation planners and engineers who are passionate about multi-modal transportation including bicyclists; public transportation vehicles and riders; pedestrians of all ages and abilities; and vehicular safety.

The ideal candidate would have the flexibility to work out of the Boston, MA or Taunton, MA offices.

  • Apply general concepts of urban design and development as they relate to transportation planning and engineering.
  • Develop drawings and renderings for use in reports, public meetings, and client-focused materials.
  • Understand the integration of engineering, planning, street design, and bicycle and pedestrian oriented planning.


  • Experience with relevant drafting/design software, such as AutoCAD, GIS, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • Ability to computer-generate graphics to assist with visualization of ideas. The ability to illustrate concepts by hand is desirable, but not essential.
  • Strong graphic skills, including the ability to illustrate complex information
  • Understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of transportation design
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Cooperative skills in working efficiently with a team
  • Organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule.

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of professional experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field.
  • A Master’s degree can be considered to count towards applied experience, based on the portfolio of work products provided.


This position has no immediate supervisory responsibilities.


This job operates primarily in a professional office environment. This role requires frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works outside the office and may be exposed to outside weather conditions. This position may include occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.


This position may risk exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.


This is a full-time position. The typical work days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some night and weekend work may be required.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
