Transportation Planner – Central Transportation Planning Staff

The Central Transportation Planning Staff of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization seeks a transportation planner for the Certification Activities Group. The planner will provide professional services to the MPO, with particular focus on the MPO’s 3C-related planning activities: the Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP), the Transportation Equity Program (TE), and the Public Participation Program (PPP).

The Transportation Planner will:

  • Coordinate with the program managers of the LRTP, TIP, UPWP and TE to:
    • provide technical and policy analysis
    • conduct research and collect data
    • update and maintain key data bases
    • review and interpret federal guidance and processes
    • prepare meeting materials/certification documents
    • participate in public outreach activities
    • plan and prepare for various meetings
  • Support MPO communication activities by assisting with:
    • writing blog articles and press releases
    • responding to public comments
    • revising the contact database
    • selecting meeting sites

Desired qualifications include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, urban or regional planning, public policy, environmental sciences, economics, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences, including elected officials, technical staff, and the general public
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise materials
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders
  • Proficiency working with spreadsheets and databases
  • Attention to detail and application of quality-assurance procedures to all products and activities

Previous MPO experience and knowledge of the MPO 3C planning process are desirable. General knowledge of urban and city planning, transportation, and environmental issues are preferred.
