The town of Bridgewater is seeking a candidate to join our team in the role of Community & Economic Development Director. The successful candidate will value innovation, partnerships and teamwork; demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and accountability which advance and promote the values of the community through his/her daily interactions with residents, customers, as well as the town’s management and elected and appointed officials; and promote forward-looking ideas to better serve the public. Serving under the general direction of the Town Manager’s Office, the Community & Economic Development Director is responsible for providing overall management of the Community & Economic Development Office and its initiatives including regulation of the community development programs, planning, grant-writing and permitting functions.

The Director is also responsible for planning activities, including: a variety of highly technical planning tasks; plan review for developments, sites, plans, and other submittal documents; research and preparation of reports and oversee agenda development for the Planning Board; formal presentation to Town Council of recommendations for development and land uses in accordance with town codes, ordinances, and regulations; assisting the general public and the development community regarding matters and concerns related to land use, development, housing and zoning; promptly responding to frequent inquiries; delivering clear communication of policy and ordinance requirements to the public and the development community; the receipt, review and processing of applications; the research, preparation, and presentation of information to the Planning Board and other boards, as required; and regular attendance at community meetings, events, and work sessions.

The ideal candidate must also utilize practical decision-making, have a dedication to public service, and be comfortable working as part of a team. Requires a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, economic development, public policy or related field. A master’s degree is strongly preferred. Knowledge of municipal development processes and experience interacting with government entities and officials is desirable.

The ideal candidate will have at least five to eight years of experience in community development, including no less than five years of progressively responsible experience planning, grant-writing and administration. Experience in implementing and overseeing the economic development activities is a plus. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) designations is preferred but not required. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and ability to maintain positive working relationships with residents, team members, businesses, and outside agencies is also required.
