Planning Technician

This position provides support for a broad range of planning functions, including the regulatory review process, and is critical to carrying out key objectives for the department, including the land use code update.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in planning or a closely related field, and have at least one year of experience in NH municipal planning.  This position is responsible for a variety of duties, including both technical office and field work involved in the processing and review of regulatory applications and enforcement of City ordinances, codes and regulations; issuing permits for land use changes and construction, and conducting inspections; and providing technical and administrative assistance to Planning and Code Enforcement staff.

Other duties may include:

  • Evening and early morning meetings with the Historic District Commission, Planning Board, and Conservation Commission.
  • Site inspections to determine compliance
  • Project coordination
  • Preparing requests for proposals
  • Conducting surveys, compiling data, and performing statistical analysis
  • Providing information to the public relating to zoning, building code and environmental review

Candidates should have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations, and to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Computer skills are required, including a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics software. Physical demands of this position include the ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; standing and walking; reaching with hands and arms; talking or hearing.  Specific vision abilities include close vision.

A valid driver’s license is required.  Pay rate is $24.31 to $30.29/hour, with a competitive  benefits plan, which includes medical, dental, life, and disability insurances.
