Senior Planner, Town of Welesley


The Senior Planner supports the Planning Director in carrying out municipal planning, zoning and subdivision programs under the provisions of state law and the Town of Wellesley Bylaws. The incumbent performs a variety of complex technical and professional work in the current and long range planning of the Town, including the development and implementation of land use policies and regulations; assisting the Director in staff and consultant supervision; providing staff support for the Planning Board, Design Review Board, Historic District Commission, Historical Commission, and Denton Road Neighborhood Conservation District Commission; and serving as the department head in the Director’s absence.

The work requires frequent contact with multiple constituencies and the ability to discuss issues, provide information and technical assistance, and explain regulations and Departmental policies clearly and courteously, even in contentious situations.

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning or related field, and a minimum of three years of planning experience; advanced degrees may substitute for a portion of municipal planning experience. Also required are working knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal planning; knowledge of Massachusetts municipal planning, zoning and subdivision laws and regulations and of Massachusetts procurement law and contract management; the ability to acquire working knowledge of the Town’s General Bylaws and Zoning Bylaws; the ability to interact effectively with the general public and strong verbal and oral communication skills; and a valid driver’s license. The anticipated hiring range is $60,000 – $72,000.
