VHB’s growing Watertown, MA office is seeking a Senior Urban Designer/Planner office to strengthen our already robust planning, urban design and landscape architecture team. This individual will be responsible for leading highly complex planning and urban design assignments for both public and private clients, while working with VHB’s multidisciplinary teams on a highly interactive basis.

  • Execute project work that includes the creation of urban design plans, TOD Studies, Renderings and visualization graphics, comprehensive master plans, vision plans, zoning analysis and design guidelines
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and illustrative graphics
  • Identify and secure new business
  • Manage projects
  • Collaborate with marketing staff to ensure consistent materials and strategies are being used on project pursuits
  • Collaborate with regional Planning and Design Practice Leaders to develop and implement a strategic vision for our Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Practice
  • Work with team leaders to provide oversight, direction, management, mentoring and ongoing communication to work team
  • Identify and implement innovative and creative approaches to undertaking urban design and planning assignments, including working with VHB resources to incorporate new technologies and communication strategies in overall product delivery


  • Team-oriented with strong capability to motivate others and engender a collaborative environment
  • Collaborative design and problem-solving skills with clients, stakeholders, and team partners in highly complex assignments
  • Digital media design skills including, AutoCad, Photoshop, Sketch-Up, Illustrator, InDesign, PowerPoint and full Microsoft Office Suite. Strong 3-D Design and rendering skills
  • Excellent presentation graphics skills (both hand-drawn and computer-aided)
  • Strong knowledge of urban design and planning best practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of New England business landscape including clients, teaming partners, regulations, politics, etc.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills


  • BA in urban design, landscape architecture, planning, or related field (Masters Degree preferred)
  • 15+ years of urban design, planning and landscape design experience
  • Professional AICP certification and/or CLARB certification preferred
  • LEED Certification (or similar) preferred
  • Strong project management skills required
  • Demonstrated track record of developing new client relationships and growing business
  • Strong portfolio diversity
  • Public speaking experience, including representing clients in public meetings
  • Experience in leading a team
  • Experience working within an interdisciplinary company environment
